About This Course

Balance Start is the foundation course of the Dog Balance program. Rather than simply teaching obedience, it teaches owners how to create an environment where dogs naturally learn through structure, consistency, and effective communication.

Throughout the course, you will learn how to organize your dog's daily routine, prepare an effective training environment, use food correctly as a learning tool, develop attention and engagement, and progressively teach fundamental obedience exercises.

Each lesson follows a practical, step-by-step approach that can be immediately applied at home. By focusing on timing, consistency, and clear communication, you will build a confident, balanced dog that enjoys working with you.

The course also introduces proper leash handling, body language, engagement techniques, focus exercises, recall, position work, duration training, and environmental generalization, creating a solid foundation for more advanced training levels.

Whether you are a first-time dog owner or looking to improve your training methods, Balance Start provides the essential skills required to establish a lifelong partnership built on trust, cooperation, and mutual understanding.

Introduction to Balance Start

Welcome to the Balance Start course. In this introductory lesson, you will discover the philosophy behind the Dog Balance method and learn why building a balanced relationship with your dog begins with structure, consistency, and clear communication rather than obedience alone. You'll gain an overview of the training journey ahead and understand how each lesson builds progressively to develop focus, confidence, engagement, and reliable everyday behaviours. This introduction prepares you to approach every exercise with the right mindset, ensuring long-term success for both you and your dog.

Volume -
Building the Foundations of Recall

In this lesson, you will begin teaching your dog one of the most important obedience skills—a reliable recall. You'll learn how to encourage your dog to willingly return to you by creating positive associations and rewarding engagement. The lesson explains how to introduce the recall exercise in a calm environment, establish clear communication, and avoid common mistakes that reduce reliability. Mastering these foundations will strengthen your dog's focus, trust, and responsiveness, preparing you for more advanced exercises later in the course.

Volume -
Guiding Movement with Your Hands

Hand guidance is a fundamental communication tool in the Dog Balance method. In this lesson, you will learn how to use precise hand movements to guide your dog's body position naturally and without force. By rewarding correct responses, your dog will begin to understand how to follow your guidance with confidence and accuracy. This exercise establishes the foundation for future obedience behaviours by improving coordination, focus, and communication between you and your dog.

Volume -
Building Front Position and Attention

This lesson focuses on teaching your dog to remain directly in front of you while maintaining attention and engagement. You'll discover how to use body language instead of excessive hand guidance to encourage your dog to hold the correct position confidently. Developing a stable front position improves concentration, strengthens communication, and prepares your dog for more structured obedience exercises that require precision and self-control.

Volume -
Heel Position with Focus

In this lesson, you will teach your dog to develop a correct heel position while maintaining attention throughout the exercise. You'll learn how to reinforce precise positioning, encourage your dog to remain engaged as you move together, and build the consistency required for reliable loose-leash walking and advanced heel work. This lesson lays the groundwork for controlled movement and accurate obedience in everyday situations.

Section 2

Extending Heel Work

Once your dog understands the basic heel position, the next step is to gradually increase the distance while maintaining accuracy and attention. In this lesson, you'll learn how to extend heel work without losing engagement, reinforce correct positioning over longer periods, and build consistency through progressive repetition. By increasing duration at the right pace, your dog will develop greater focus and confidence while remaining attentive throughout the exercise.

Volume -
Automatic Sit at Every Stop

This lesson introduces the automatic sit, teaching your dog to sit every time you stop walking without requiring an additional command. You'll discover how to build this behaviour through repetition, proper timing, and consistent reinforcement so that sitting becomes a natural response. Developing an automatic sit improves your dog's focus, self-control, and readiness for more advanced obedience exercises.

Volume -
Increasing Attention Duration

Maintaining attention for longer periods is essential for reliable obedience. In this lesson, you'll learn how to gradually increase your dog's ability to remain focused while holding the sit and down positions. Through progressive training and careful reinforcement, your dog will develop greater patience, impulse control, and concentration, creating a stronger foundation for future exercises performed in more distracting environments.

Volume -
Introducing Leash Pressure

In this lesson, you'll learn how to introduce leash pressure as a clear and consistent communication tool rather than a form of correction. By teaching your dog to understand and respond calmly to light pressure, you'll improve guidance, responsiveness, and confidence while avoiding confusion or unnecessary force. This technique provides an important foundation for safe, controlled movement both during training and everyday walks.

Volume -
Attention, Stability and Distance

This lesson teaches your dog to maintain attention and remain confidently in position as the distance between you gradually increases. You'll learn how to build stability without creating uncertainty, reinforcing calm behaviour and reliable responses even when you're no longer standing close to your dog. These skills strengthen independence and prepare your dog for more advanced obedience exercises requiring greater precision and self-control.

Teaching a Reliable Stay

A reliable stay teaches your dog patience, self-control, and confidence. In this lesson, you'll learn how to build duration gradually, helping your dog remain calmly in position until released rather than anticipating your return. By progressing at the right pace and reinforcing success consistently, your dog will develop a dependable stay that can be applied in everyday situations as well as more advanced training exercises.

Volume -
Down, Recall and Return to Heel

In this lesson, you'll combine several previously learned behaviours into one smooth exercise sequence. Your dog will learn to remain in the down position, perform a controlled recall when called, and finish by returning accurately to the heel position. This integrated exercise strengthens communication, improves responsiveness, and helps your dog transition confidently between commands while maintaining focus and precision throughout the entire sequence.

Volume -
Platform Training for Stability and Focus

Platform training is an excellent way to improve your dog's body awareness, balance, and self-control. In this lesson, you'll learn how to introduce the platform, encourage your dog to confidently step onto it, and reinforce calm, stationary behaviour. This exercise increases focus, precision, and confidence while creating a strong foundation for more advanced positioning and movement exercises later in the Dog Balance program.

Volume -
Directional Movement with Hand Signals

This lesson introduces directional movement using clear hand signals to guide your dog accurately between designated positions. You'll learn how to improve responsiveness, body awareness, and coordination while reinforcing precise movements without unnecessary verbal commands. As your dog's confidence grows, these exercises strengthen communication and prepare you for more advanced handling skills

Volume -
Communication and Structured Walking: Leash Handling

In the final lesson of Balance Start, you'll bring together the skills developed throughout the course by learning how to use the leash as a communication tool during structured walking exercises. You'll practice changes of direction, changes of pace, and correct body positioning to encourage your dog to remain attentive and connected throughout the walk. By combining these techniques, you'll reinforce calm behaviour, improve everyday walking, and establish a strong foundation for the more advanced exercises introduced in the next level of the Dog Balance program.

Volume -
Communication and Structured Walking: Walking Exercises

In the final lesson of Balance Start, you'll bring together the skills developed throughout the course by learning how to use the leash as a communication tool during structured walking exercises. You'll practice changes of direction, changes of pace, and correct body positioning to encourage your dog to remain attentive and connected throughout the walk. By combining these techniques, you'll reinforce calm behaviour, improve everyday walking, and establish a strong foundation for the more advanced exercises introduced in the next level of the Dog Balance program.
